Taking the Bernina Pass to Tirano

This morning we drove past Zurich and stopped in a leafy lakeside car park to get a few hours of work done. It was really tranquil, and great to figure out how we can both be set up in the van with two screens each and focus without getting in each other’s way.

After traversing a large part of the Swiss Alps through a series of tunnels, we emerged to take the Bernina Pass to complete the job. We were originally planning to stay somewhere near Pontresina last night, with its view of a glacier, but decided to just stop and look at it and then push on through into Italy.

We noticed as we started our descent toward Italy how Italian everything started feeling, to the point where we kept thinking we must have passed the border (most of the border controls up until now have been virtually non-existent). Small villages full of ‘pizzerie’, ‘ristoranti’ and ‘farmacie’ but with German-sounding place names. Finally the long, steep descent eased off and we rolled into the quiet town of Tirano in time for an evening stroll and a glass of wine while our dinner (chilli) slow-cooked in the van.
